Healthcare Administration, MHA

Realizing the synergies between our graduate business and health science programs, Winston-Salem State University is proud to offer a Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA) program. With more than 11 million jobs, healthcare is the second largest employer and the largest industry in the United States. Virtually all new private sector jobs over the past 5 years came from healthcare.

The Master of Healthcare Administration will prepare students for a broad range of careers in health services management-positions in hospitals, outpatient clinics, public health, nonprofit health associations, long-term care facilities, pharmaceutical companies, durable medical equipment manufacturers, health insurance and temporary services. The MHA program plays a significant role in the university’s goal to provide well-trained and highly motivated leaders in the healthcare field.  This program is part-time in nature and targets working professionals who seek a graduate degree by taking evening courses.

Learning Outcomes

  • Graduates of the MHA program will be prepared to deal with a broad range of health sector issues in a manner that demonstrates superior knowledge, skills, and cultural competency. The program will focus on written and oral communication, skills in decision-making, and leadership.

  • Core competencies are expected in market assessment and strategic planning; management competencies in finance, human resources, and information resources; analytical competencies to support decision-making using knowledge of economics, accounting, and legal and ethical frameworks.

  • The educational objectives are designed to prepare graduates to take a leadership role in developing policy formulation, implementation, and evaluation, including quality assessment, outcome measurement, and process improvement.


Admission Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution
  • Cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.75
  • Scores from Graduate Record Exam
  • WSSU graduate school application
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Two official copies of all transcripts from colleges/universities previously attended
  • Admissions essay focusing on “Why I want to pursue an MHA and why I want to obtain it from WSSU.”
  • $50 application fee
  • Resume-work experience in the healthcare field is a requirement and a critical component of the admission process
  • Personal interview

July 15 for fall semester


Transfer Credits

Subject to the approval of the Assistant Dean for Graduate Business programs, up to 9 hours of graduate transfer credit may be applied toward the MHA.  Graduate transfer credit will only be granted for courses completed with a grade of “B” or better and taken within the last five (5) years.


Degree Requirements

  • The MHA program consits of 45 credit hours; 15 courses including an integrative study (there are no residency or internship requirements).
  • Only graduate students will be allowed to take courses in the MHA program.


Time Limits for Completion

Students can complete the MHA program in 2-1/2 years (four semesters and two summers).  The time limit for completion of the program is six years.
