EDU 6316 - Fundamentals of Mathematics: Exploring Theories and Practices

Credits: 3 hrs
The course will focus on the methods and materials that are most effective in teaching mathematics to elementary school students (K-6). The course begins with the following premises: (1) Teachers have beliefs about how mathematics should be taught in schools, and these beliefs are often based on their own experiences as students. (2) These experiences should not necessarily be regarded as examples of effective practice. (3) Important changes are occurring in what is known about the learning and teaching of mathematics. (4) Teachers must think critically about their own mathematics learning to design appropriate experiences for their students. Prerequisite(s): EDU 6302 or permission of the Program Coordinator
